My taste runs to the more simple and modern. I find many Christmas decorations to be gaudy and overwhelming. Luckily, there are many talented people out there who share my sensibilities. Following is a collection of wonderful modern Christmas decorations that you can make yourself.

Geometric Paper Ornaments
Stylish geometric ornaments are easy to make with provided templates! I absolutely love the snowflake tetrahedron. What fun.
Modern Circle Paper Garland
This modern take on a garland uses a large paper punch to punch circles out of colored paper and/or old books. They are then simple sewn together on a sewing machine (I bet you could sew by hand too). The results are a wonderful, festive update on a traditional decoration.
This ornament has a mid-century feel and is simple made from cardstock and small grommets.
Geometric Shrink Plastic Snowflake Ornament
This is a fun project. Cut ornaments out of shrink plastic (website provides templates) and heat in the oven. You can leave them clear or spray with glitter.
Here is a super simple idea with high impact. Instead of an elaborate centerpiece, just roll pretty scrapbook paper into a tree shape and secure with double-sided tape. Using a bunch together is what gives this impact. Would also look great on a mantel.

Yarn Ball Ornaments
Who knew that yarn, a styrofoam ball, and some glue could add up to such beautiful ornaments? Wrap 2 colors of yard simultaneously to create the striped ones.
Print out these adorable mid-century houses on cardstock. You can decorate them or leave them as is. So cute!

These ornaments are painted to look as if they were dipped in gold. Quite a lovely, simple effect.
